c24fg73 uniformity issues

#1
I got my c24fg73 two days ago and i'm having some uniformity issues. I notice this while i'm dragging windows or in-game while moving the camera on the sky. It's also a bit distracting on photoshop. Also the bottom right of the screen is noticibly warmer than the rest of the screen, not so easy to see on camera though.

I would like to know lim's opinion about this, since he got to review at least 3 models of this panel.
I can live with this, but if i can get a better one by returning it, i will.

I don't know the manufacturer date but this panel has no color artifacts at all, not even at 100hz(at 100hz trailling is similar to my TN, 0 trailling on UFO). I even tried the test image you used on your review.

Hey dude,

I (only) had 3 CFG70 units, and all of them had a bit of this banding stript at uniform colors, and only one of them was "so good" that it was only visible at uniform colors. So, in the end, all monitors will differ in homogeneity, and Samsungs units in these "banding strips" unfortunately.

You can get a better one, but as long you don't see this issue in normal game content (except skies) I would not exchange if you are satisfied otherwise.

With this information, I even would stick to your current model probably.

This was my 27 Inch model: https://www.limscave.com/media/Samsung_ ... nding3.jpg and it was worse compared to my 24 Inch models I had.

Especially in Vikings (the series) it was very disturbing: https://www.limscave.com/media/Samsung_ ... kings2.jpg while Vikings have a filter which raises the black value a bit. So as long it does not appear that much in content / games where blacks are a bit raised (like no mans skies) I would stick to your unit

I'll keep it then... I also watch Vikings, didn't notice it there. Black uniformity on the other hand is excelent and I really like this 2500-3000:1 contrast ratio.

If they fixed these uniformity issues and maybe give us adjustable overdrive, this would be the perfect 1080p 144hz monitor in my opinion. Overdrive at 100hz is spot on, 120/144hz could use a little bit more.

Yes, and fix the artifact issues in ALL units :) Only the VA glow in the end is the last step they should improve
and maybe give us adjustable overdrive
Yes, this also would be really good :)

I think since you have really 0% artifacts, you have a very good unit. I heard already a lot of issues with artifacts from other units within the cfg73

Only thing that bothers me now is the oversaturated colors. sRGB mode only cuts saturation at the high end, midtones are still oversaturated. Some faces look redish due to this...

Is there any solution for this? ICC profile/windows settings?

Edit: never mind... I just found the driver for the monitor, that fixed it. It includes an ICC profile.

Yes, skin tone sometimes looks worse than on an IPS panel for example. Also, the game "Firewatch" does not look that good on the Samsung quantum dots while this game is heavy oversaturated into my eyes. For this other games can have a better look, like star wars for example, where the laser guns and explosions really looks awesome :P

Which driver? From the internet or from the CD? An ICC profile shouldn't work in most games :O

From here:
http://www.samsung.com/pt/support/model/LC24FG73FQUXEN/ (you can get the same installer from the cd)

Intaller includes both the driver and icm profile. Just need to add the profile and tick "use windows display calibration".
Colors look great now, i haven't tested all games, but it seems to work on pubg.

This white point uniformity still bothers me, while i'm browsing or using anything with white/grey background, it's around a 10% delta between the left and bottom right of the scren, compared using a white balance slider on a second monitor.
Managed to get a good example even though it's hard to get on camera https://imgur.com/a/3X1Zi (25% gray). Top right has a natural wamer tone while bottom right has a greenish warmer tone (the one that annoys me a bit).

I think I can see the color temperature uniformity :/ And I can understand that this bothers you. My Acer XF271HUA, for example, was clearly brighter in the center and darker on the right / left side while my 3rd Viewsonic XG2703-GS had a warmer temperature on the whole left and a cooler one on the whole right side. If its something you cannot deal with I would exchange and just try another unit...

According to the ICC profile - This would be really interesting when it works in PUBG. I've tried to find out if games read ICC profiles between 15 games, but it was not possible to see a difference without a direct 1:1 side by side comparison, so that I need a quantum dot for this test :P

Also just wondering because I have just uploaded a new video with the main topic "monitor deviations" and "optimal settings": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dcgsL0tNxhY
So that ICC profiles shouldn't give a huge advantage.

The question is if games read ICC profiles, and how do they read them. They could limit the color gamut to a color space, or even just use correction within the color gamut - Something I still did not really find out. So if you see such a huge difference this would mean that the Samsung has HUGE delta E deviations OR PUBG can limit a game to 100% sRGB so that everything above will not been shown

I was wrong it doesn't work for PUBG, i think it was reshade since i had vibrance on and now i don't.

I've seen people talking about cpkeeper but it doesn't work either for pubg. Personally it doesn't bother me on games, i actually like the extra color on the games i play.
It bothered me on chrome, mpc hc and photos, all those things are fixed with icc profile.

I don't know why samsung includes a broken sRGB preset... Is it that hard to make? What about the chg70 with the latest firmware? does it have broken sRGB preset too?

Edit: found a solution, have yet to test it since i don't have hardware for it. http://www.avsforum.com/forum/139-displ ... ndows.html

Also found out that my screen was manufactured on week 35 of 2017 according to the EDID. Firmware is 1002.1.

An ICC profile will change only the gamma and color temperature value on desktop, not colors - If you have Photoshop or some other software which is able to read an ICC profile, you easily can test this while just open a picture on desktop and then open one with an ICC profile in Photoshop

Quality control probably is very expensive, and the trend tends to save every single cent during production - But this is just something we find in all products

Like mentioned, on the desktop, it shouldn't work

Did you have tried this already?: https://reshade.me/ But I don't know if this works on desktop - Never used yet such software

My old cfg73 started to randomly fliker on the right side (probably damaged led) soo i got a replacement from amazon. This replacement is PERFECT, no more uniformity issues and has less va glow.

All lagom.nl Inversion patterns are static while on the old one 3 of them would flicker.
There's no banding strip on the left either (i was surprised since lim's had this on all of his samples), this is a week 11 2018 panel.
Motion is exactly the same on both with ever soo slightly less overdrive artifacts on the new one.

Tests (both on default white balance 25% brightness):
https://imgur.com/a/rnqNZzP (25% gray)
https://imgur.com/a/48PbZ9L (Clearly less VA glow, even though black uniformity seems worse).
Was i super lucky or did samsung improve this panel a lot on later batches?
